Reflection

Repeatedly the prophets insisted that God protects the poor and the despised; three times our prophet invites his hearers to seek God and take refuge in him. In the beatitudes Jesus expands on this Old Testament insight.

These demanding ideals, which reserve the world’s values, are addressed to all who would be his disciples. The first, about poverty of spirit, sets the tone and sums up all the rest.

Those who do not rely on the world are free to entrust themselves to God. Then Jesus speaks directly to his followers preparing them for persecution—and the joy which can flow from it. For if we suffer with Christ we will share his Joy! The psalm reminds us of the happiness of those “poor ones” who trust in God so as to be filled by him. This looks like foolishness, but St. Paul insists that the gospel opposes human wisdom. We cannot be proud of our own accomplishments; our only boast is God’s grace. Living according to the beatitudes conforms us to Christ and graces us with an anticipation of eternal joy.

Archdiocese of Toronto Celebrates 175th Anniversary

December 17 marks the 175th anniversary of the Arch-diocese of Toronto, kicking off a year-long celebration of this historic milestone. Originally part of the Diocese of Kingston, on December 17, 1841, Pope Gregory XVI formally created the Diocese of Toronto and named Michael Power its first bishop.

The Archdiocese of Toronto is planning numerous historical and spiritual activities to commemorate the 175th anniversary, including a large-scale celebration at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica on May 30, 2017. In acknowledging this significant anniversary, Cardinal Thomas Collins remarked:

“It is a tremendous blessing to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Toronto. It is always a joy to express my gratitude to those, past and present, who have made incredible contributions to our city, province and country, inspired by their faith. Over the next year, we will honour the past, energize our present faith community and look forward to an exciting future.”

In the Archdiocese of Toronto we are blessed to have living and serving among us more than 900 religious men and women of 100 different religious congregations. This World Day for Consecrated Life is a wonderful opportunity for us to thank God for the gifts of these religious sisters, brothers and priests and to pray for God’s blessing upon them in their efforts to faithfully live the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Bishop Wayne Kirkpatrick will preside at a special Mass on Sunday, January 29th at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Basilica, Toronto in celebration of the vocation and witness of these special men and women who are such a vital and important part of the life and ministry of the Church in our Archdiocese.
