REFLECTION

Jesus is the friend of sinners who repent! Today Luke recounts one of the most beautiful episodes in his gospel. While dining in a Pharisee’s house Jesus has accepted, as proofs of sorrow, repentance and love, the audacious gestures of a woman of ill-repute. These were considered indecent in the self-righteous world of the Pharisee; but this woman’s faith, expressed in gesture, represents what all Christians – repentant sinners – must have, and her love is a sign that already she has received pardon. Jesus’ words of forgiveness assure her and confound her critics. Today’s gospel ends by referring to that small community which surrounded Jesus as he preached. It included both the Twelve and a number of women whom Jesus had cured and who now cared for the group’s needs. The important passage from Galatians states the principle that we are not saved by our own merits but through faith in Christ; then Paul tells in vibrant language what this has meant for his own life. Like Paul, David, and the repentant woman, every one of us who is forgiven experiences the Lord living in us.
