REFLECTION
Jesus’ ministry is completed, his friends left to their own devices. With several others, Peter has gone fishing – unsuccessfully, until Jesus directs their efforts. They recognize him because of their huge catch. The Lord invites them to share the meal he has prepared, a sign of the Eucharistic meal his disciples will share in the future. Once Peter had boasted of his love for Christ, only to deny him three times during the passion. Now Jesus requires from Peter a threefold renewal of commitment before he is given special pastoral responsibility for the Church. Much will be demanded of Peter in the future; as Christ the shepherd laid down his life, so must Peter but not before he has preached courageously about Jesus, as we are told in the Acts. The vision described in the passage from Revelation allows us to glimpse the heavenly liturgy of praise. The life of every Christian, whether prayer or in ministry to others, is part of this great hymn of glory. Easter has opened up for us a new dimension of life.
