Reflection
In today’s gospel Jesus counsels self-criticism, both in choice of leaders and in Christian relationships. The person we follow determines what we will be. Mature disciples will be like their teacher Jesus. But are we really following Jesus? What of our relationships with one another? Do we recognize our own faults, or are we aware only of other people’s sins? It is hypocritical to accuse others when we are blind to our own misdeeds, Jesus tells us. True disciples can be recognized by their actions, by the kind of fruit they bear. The final verses of the gospel provide the link with today’s first reading. How our words betray us! The wise sayings of Sirach ring true. May our words be those of the disciple, words of thanksgiving, like those spoken by the psalmist and St. Paul. Paul’s hymn of triumph at the end of his letter to the Corinthians declares that we too can hope for victory over sin and death. Through Jesus’ resurrection our work will be fruitful whatever the difficulties we face.
