Reflection
What is our potential as humans? Nothing less than a transforming relationship of love with God. When the Holy One comes close to us, we become new people. Abraham believed in God’s word, and for his faith, was promised the future. Faith brings us into the presence of the living God; to seek his face should be our resolve this Lent. In the gospel of Luke, the transfiguration is closely linked with the agony in the garden, when Jesus will again converse with God in the presence of his three friends. Here on this mountain a change comes over the Lord in the course of prayer. In this state of glory he speaks of the suffering he will face in Jerusalem before he passes over to the Father. We are allowed to glimpse Jesus’ intimate union with God; because of this, he will be able to adhere to God’s will during his agony in the garden of Gethsemane and while hanging on the cross. As it was for Jesus, the obedient road toward the cross is our road to realizing the full glory of our humanity. St. Paul promises that such glory is our destiny.
