Reflection

We are all God’s prodigal children who have wandered far from our Father’s home. How our redeemer longs to welcome us home, where we can experience for ourselves God’s great goodness. The Old Testament reading tells of the first celebration of the Passover feast in the promised land. The gospel parable of the forgiving father teaches us about the immeasurable tenderness of God. When the wayward son returns, his father runs out to meet him, calling for a celebration even before the son has finished his act of contrition. No longer is he counted as dead or lost! The elder brother, displeased at his father’s forgiving love, is like the self-righteous person who is outraged that God’s welcome is extended to every sinner who repents. Like the wayward son, we have been reconciled with God through Christ. The new creation St. Paul speaks of is all God’s work; Jesus became like us in order that we might become like him. How much God loves us! We celebrate our reconciliation and our newness of life in this Eucharist.
