REFLECTION

For Isaiah the image of wasteland represents the state of humanity unredeemed. But God is coming to save us, and the prophet reflects the Lord’s approaching splendor. Our lives should radiate joy. For God’s people are about to be made whole; he is redeeming us. Everlasting happiness will replace the suffering we experience exiled from God. In the gospel, Jesus applies himself to Isaiah’s words about the Messiah who saves the poor, the ill, the disabled. Jesus himself will bring in the age of joy. But in the prison cell John the Baptist questioned whether Jesus fit the Messiah’s description; John’s message emphasized vengeance. Jesus’ ministry will perfect our understanding of how God saves: the role of God brings healing, it is not imposed by might or in wrath. Those who witness Christ’s work are even more blessed than John, the one who prepared his way.

SHARELIFE CAMPAIGN

Living the Gospel through ShareLife

Your year-end gift will double in value! From now until the end of 2022, your contribution to our parish’s ShareLife campaign will be matched by an anonymous donor up to a total of $1 million. Our parishioners’ support of ShareLife is making a difference in the lives of those in need. Last year, ShareLife supporters like you enabled 21,000 people to receive affordable mental health care through family service agencies across the Archdiocese of Toronto, including our community.

Our goal this year is $106,000. To date we have achieved $84,600. Please give using a ShareLife envelope, online through our parish website, or at sharelife.org/donate.
