REFLECTION
Today’s gospel shows Jesus acting in a way unique among God’s messengers: he chooses his own followers, as did the God of Israel, to harvest what God has sown. As a further sign, he hands on to these disciples authority to proclaim God’s rule and to heal. Their ministry, restricted to Jesus’ own people until after his reconciling death, must unite charity and preaching. He chose the Twelve out of compassion for people ill-served by their religious leaders; since the disciples’ call is pure grace, they must pass on the Good News without expecting payment. Not only the Twelve but all Christians are called to carry on Christ’s ministry. In telling of God’s promise to those who love him, Exodus indicates how this may be done: they will be named a priestly people to pray, proclaim, offer sacrifice on behalf of the entire human family. Under the leadership of the Twelve and their successors, we can all collaborate in the rich harvest—made fruitful by Jesus’ loving death—which God gives to the world.

MISSION APPEAL
The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará, a missionary Institute of religious sisters, are happy to be given the opportunity to speak at St. Joseph’s Parish on July 15 and 16 about their Institute and their mission in Egypt.
Here in Egypt, the missionary sisters work in several houses, providing education for children, teenagers, and young women. They also have a home for girls with special needs. Since most of the girls come from poor families, the sisters also take care of the families by giving them some assistance.
As Egypt is not economically stable at present, the sisters do not receive much help from the local people; thus, their mission truly depends on your powerful prayers and generous contributions to continue their work.
For more information about their mission, please visit www.servidoras.org or www.ssvmmissions.org.
