REFLECTION
Jesus has not promised an easy road to those who follow him. The way of discipleship includes frustration and suffering, and perhaps persecution. Jeremiah’s confession helps us to understand the trials of those who speak on behalf of God. The prophet knows disloyalty but experiences God’s nearness in the midst of mortal danger. He prays with the joy of those whose hope is in God, who have cast their fear on the Lord. He is a Christfigure, as is the speaker of today’s psalms; they represent all who are persecuted for God’s name. Though we disciples may not die as martyrs, we are given the opportunity of confessing Christ in our daily lives. Our loyalty to him must be complete. How can we remain faithful under persecution? Jesus encourages us to trust our Father fully; since he loves us so much we need not be afraid. After all, are we not worth more than many sparrows?

MISSION APPEAL
The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará, a missionary Institute of religious sisters, are happy to be given the opportunity to speak at St. Joseph’s Parish on July 15 and 16 about their Institute and their mission in Egypt.
Here in Egypt, the missionary sisters work in several houses, providing education for children, teenagers, and young women. They also have a home for girls with special needs. Since most of the girls come from poor families, the sisters also take care of the families by giving them some assistance.
As Egypt is not economically stable at present, the sisters do not receive much help from the local people; thus, their mission truly depends on your powerful prayers and generous contributions to continue their work.
For more information about their mission, please visit www.servidoras.org or www.ssvmmissions.org.
