Reflection

The book of Sirach, a collection of wisdom sayings, reminds us that we have been given the freedom to choose right or wrong, life or death. God calls us only to life; our choice is to be made in fidelity to him. Though it may be difficult, God’s law is not burdensome for those who choose to be faithful. They are happy to do his will. Such wisdom is not readily understood by the world, Paul tells us.

Christ was crucified for preaching the wisdom that transcends human understanding. Jesus’ life shows that we must die to ourselves in order to receive life. Only the Holy Spirit can lead us in the ways of God, since the Spirit alone plumbs his depths. God’s commands, not to be set aside, are given their perfect interpretation by Jesus in today’s gospel; he completes the former law. He insists on an ideal of behaviour which goes beyond external legal obedience.

Reconciliation with those we have offended takes precedence even over sacrifice to God. This way of life is demanding but God’s grace and guidance are with us.

Archdiocese of Toronto Celebrates 175th Anniversary

December 17 marks the 175th anniversary of the Arch-diocese of Toronto, kicking off a year-long celebration of this historic milestone. Originally part of the Diocese of Kingston, on December 17, 1841, Pope Gregory XVI formally created the Diocese of Toronto and named Michael Power its first bishop.

The Archdiocese of Toronto is planning numerous historical and spiritual activities to commemorate the 175th anniversary, including a large-scale celebration at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica on May 30, 2017. In acknowledging this significant anniversary, Cardinal Thomas Collins remarked:

“It is a tremendous blessing to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Toronto. It is always a joy to express my gratitude to those, past and present, who have made incredible contributions to our city, province and country, inspired by their faith. Over the next year, we will honour the past, energize our present faith community and look forward to an exciting future.”

Living the Gospel

ShareLife is more than an annual appeal—it is the way that we bring the hands of Christ to those in need! One of the core directions of our Pastoral Plan is Catholic Outreach in Justice and Love and our support for ShareLife helps to bring this to life, not only in our archdiocese, but also around the world.

Each year, thousands of people turn to a ShareLife agency for help. Our agencies provide service in an environment that is infused with Catholic values, bringing the Gospel message to the marginalized.

When we support ShareLife, we are making more than a financial contribution—we are demonstrating that the

Catholic community is actively making a difference! Thank you.
