REFLECTION
Jesus is the Lord of life. Raising the dead is indeed the sign of God among us, and today’s gospel marks the first occasion when Jesus is designated as Lord by Luke. Jesus performs this miracle not to prove his power, but out of compassion for a widow who had lost her only son. The messiah stands revealed because of Jesus’ spontaneous human pity. With authority Jesus commands the young man to awake from the dead. The Lord of life gives him back to his mother, a verse reminiscent of Elijah’s miracle recounted in today’s first reading. This prophet, who also ministered in Galilee, through laborious prayer restored to life the only son of a widow to whom he was indebted. In the letter to the Galatians, Paul tells how he was called to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. Through God’s grace alone Saul the persecutor became Paul the apostle. His message and charge to reveal God’s presence in Jesus came from God, not from the Twelve or any human being, Paul insists. Do we accept the Good News as God’s message, not men’s? Do we recognize the power of Christ to raise us from death to life with him?
