REFLECTION

Within the fifty days of Easter, the feast of the Ascen-sion emphasizes Jesus’ return to the Father and its con-sequence: his charge to make disciples of the world. The letter to the Ephesians tells us that Jesus is head of the Church, his body on earth. We see him asserting this authority both in Acts and the gospel as he takes leave of his followers. Through preaching, sacramental ministry and instruction, the Church will continue Christ’s work of making disciples. The misunderstand-ing and doubt which characterize his followers as he says farewell make it clear that this work is God’s, not human doing. It is the Spirit of Christ who gives faith and strength to these human witnesses and makes it possible for them to continue Jesus’ work in the world. One day the entire human family will recognize God to be God, and Christ will be worshipped as king and head of humankind. To hasten that day we join the psalmist in singing God’s praise

HUMANITARIAN RELIEF ECUADOR EARTHQUAKE

The Archdiocese of Toronto is accepting financial contributions for humanitarian relief following the disastrous effects of a serious earthquake on April 16 in Ecuador.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks have devastated huge areas of Ecuador, with nearly 600 people reported dead, an-other 5,700 injured and 24,000 families left homeless. Contribu-tions can be made through our parish as well through the Archdio-cese of Toronto online portal at www.archtoronto.org.

Relief workers from the official Catholic relief agency, Caritas Internationalis, are on the ground and assessing the need for assis-tance. Caritas teams are preparing to deliver tarps, hygiene and cooking kits. There is also a need for tents and inflatable boats because roads to some of the affected areas are impassable. In the coming weeks and months, Caritas will assess longer-term shelter needs. The situation is very difficult in the affected regions, as poverty had already left people living in precarious conditions.

Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways:

Online through the Archdiocese of Toronto website: www.archtoronto.org OR

• By phone through the Development Office – 416-934-3411

Ode to Mothers

Mothers cannot do it all

But surely do they try.

Mothers hear the angel’s call,

To comfort all who cry.

Mothers for themselves may fall,

For others they will fly.

Mother’s bear the weight of all,

For their children, they would die.

A Mother’s gift extends beyond

All bounds of time and space.

Her lovingness and nurturing

Make Earth a peaceful place.

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY!
