Reflection

“Nothing is impossible to faith”. With a minimum of faith, Jesus tells us, we could order trees about, and they would obey us. Faith essential to the success of the Christian mission. But we must not glory in it or what it allows us to achieve; we are only God’s servants, who, like the slaves of the ancient world, cannot expect to be paid for our labours. We are God’s property, and whatever work we do for the kingdom is our duty. The first reading emphasizes the importance of faithful work despite the apparent triumph of evil. God will save, and will bring to successful completion what is begun and carried out faith. The faithless will eventually lose heart, and their enterprises will perish. We must have faith, and wait. The second reading exhorts Timothy, who seems to have been timid, to courage, love and faithful witness as the Church’s minister. In company with the Apostle, he – and we – would welcome the opportunity to suffer for the Good News.
