REFLECTION
Love your enemies! Jesus could not have made a more startling demand of his followers. The rest of today’s Gospel elaborates on that challenge, which runs contrary to our basic human instincts. Why should the Christian ethic be so difficult to live up to? Jesus gives us the answer: because the most high God, the Holy One, forgives everyone, even the wicked. In the bible, compassion is an attribute of God, not of human beings; however, God’s conduct is to serve as the model for our behavior. Our relationship with God is determined by how we love and forgive; mercy must be part of our daily life. To receive pardon we must act toward one another as God our Father acts towards us. We will be rewarded in the measure that we are generous with others. The first reading gives us an example of this Christlike love. David spared Saul when that king was pursuing David in order to kill him. To love those who hate us is possible because our earthly selves are being conformed to the image of the one God has sent, Christ Jesus. In him we learn to love.

Did you know?
- That Baptism is the Sacrament on which the 6 Sacraments rest?
- That because Baptism is a door that welcomes a child to our faith, parents must choose for their child Godparents that are deeply committed to our Catholic faith?
- That choosing Godparents for a child’s Baptism must not be a token reward to a friend or a family member?
