REFLECTION

What does it mean to be truly free? On this first Sunday of Lent, liberation from slavery to human masters is the sign of freedom from slavery to sin. Within a ritual of remembrance and thanksgiving, Deuteronomy tells of Israel’s deliverance from oppression in Egypt. God led the chosen people to their own land; there they could live in freedom. What God has done, God will do again. The psalm assures us that God protects those who have trust. Jesus himself was tempted to be a worldly messiah by relying on material things, worshipping power and prestige, tempting God by rashly taking risks. By his refusal, Jesus led the way for us to conquer temptation. God gives us the strength to say no to Satan’s suggestions. We are free to choose God’s way. Paul tells us what we must do to be saved: believe in the Lord Jesus and in the power of his resurrection. God sent Jesus to live in complete solidarity with us, to share our trials and our pain so that we can enjoy God’s freedom and have a share in God’s glory.

Did you know?

  1. That Lent is the greatest love story ever told; a love story that shows how God saw our sin, brokenness, and misery and chose the Cross of love for our wholeness?
  2. That Lent requires us to strip ourselves of every harmful entanglement and return to God with our whole heart?
  3. That returning to God with our whole heart doesn’t require coming to Him armed with perfect actions but rather demands coming to Him wounded, weary, and imperfect?
