REFLECTION

God loves every person. Whether it is the wicked Ninevites or the chosen people of Israel, or the millions who have yet to hear of Jesus, all are loved. Jonah, the reluctant prophet, obeyed God at last and preached repentance to the citizens of Nineveh. To his surprise, they repented! All of us must redirect our lives if we are to know God. The gospel demands sorrow for sin and faith in the Good News (which is first of all the person of Jesus). For Mark, the sea of Galilee represents the edge of the pagan world and the place where evil must be defeated. One day, Jesus’ disciples will preach the gospel to all nations; for now, however, simple people drop their work and leave their families to form the nucleus of the Church, a community with a mission to witness to and continue Jesus’ saving acts. St. Paul reminds us that we have been called to a new way of life and a different set of values—Christ’s values. We live in this imperfect world knowing that it will give way to God’s total and enduring rule, becoming a new creation.
