REFLECTION

Today we see two sides of Christian life, transfiguration and self-sacrificing love. The first reading, from an era when human sacrifice was thought to satisfy an angry deity, presents Isaac as forerunner of Jesus, God’s obedient servant. Abraham is that type of Father who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us. The prayer of Isaac, Jesus, and everyone who trusts in God even to death is heard in the psalm. Every Lent we contemplate the transfiguration, when Jesus took his three close friends to a remote place. There his appearance was gloriously changed. His disciples were awestruck at this glimpse of God, which was a foretaste of the resurrection . During Lent each of us is invited to accompany the Lord to the privileged rendezvous of prayer, there to converse with the Father. This transfiguring experience will deepen our friendship with that beloved Son who never ceases to pray for us, so that one day we can share that glory which Jesus receives from the Father.
