REFLECTION
Today’s gospel presents the death of Christ as the ultimate sign of God’s healing love. In veiled language Jesus speaks of the necessity of his crucifixion, when he will be lifted up from the earth. Just as the Israelites were healed when they looked with faith at the bronze serpent held up by Moses, so will humankind be healed when it gazes with faith at Jesus on the cross. Then we will understand how much God loves us: so much as to send the Son (we recognize him in the first reading among God’s rejected messengers) to be totally available to us. However, it is not enough that God’s Son came into the world. Each of us must either accept him as savior and believe, or reject him: the choice is ours. Christ’s coming constitutes judgement. If our actions are good, we will not fear when Christ’s light illuminates our lives. Like a work of art, we cannot take credit for our own creation; no, we are God’s work by faith in Christ. This faith is God’s gift to us; thanks be to God!
