REFLECTION
The eucharistic celebration is the Christian Passover. Jesus is our Passover lamb and we are liberated from our sins. His blood, offered for us in sacrifice, makes us clean and renews the covenant God made with us long ago. Jesus gives a new interpretation to a traditional ritual meal, breaking the bread and sharing the cup as sacramental sign of the total gift of himself, which he offers on the cross for all people. In the first reading, we see how the people signify their acceptance of God’s covenant, his promise to them. They submit to God, the creator of all things, by offering sacrifice; their common sharing of the offerings by eating of them establishes their unity. Moses sprinkles blood on them to signify that they are forgiven, healed, and made holy. But the sacrifices of the old covenant, the letter to the Hebrews tells us, were only outward signs of repentance. Jesus’ perfect self-offering has the power to transform us inwardly. We can look forward to the fulfillment of God’s promise, when we will drink the new wine with our savior in God’s kingdom.
