REFLECTION

What is the kingdom of God like? It does not resemble our notion of an earthly kingdom, Jesus says, as he uses simple images to describe the way God’s rule grows in our midst. Once sown, the seed develops without the aid of the farmer, who returns only at harvest time to reap. In the parable of the mustard seed we see that God’s rule, like Jesus’ ministry, has insignificant beginnings. From the smallest seed grows the biggest shrub, which nevertheless remains unpretentious whether as seed or tree. Not its dignity but its function of providing shelter for birds is important. So it is with the Church. The language of parable allows us to speak of God’s mysteries, but the meaning must be explained within the company of the disciples, the Church. Ezekiel’s prophecy uses impressive royal imagery for God’s promise to raise up a protector for Israel. St. Paul expresses the great longing which should be felt by every Christian: to please God so that we may join him in our heavenly home.
