REFLECTION

Christian faith does not preserve us—or the Church—from the storms of life. We must be willing to pass through them confident of God’s help and without undue alarm. In biblical thought, powers hostile to God and humans alike live in the sea. Mark’s description of the violent storm shows these powers attacking the disciples and the Son of God who, asleep, seems remote. Does Christ have to rebuke us, as he did the disciples in the boat with him, for having no faith? We have to believe even when we seem to be lost in the darkness. Jesus himself would pass though suffering and death, and we must follow him through death to resurrection. Like Job, we are asked to bear our suffering with unquestioning faith in God’s power and providence. How overwhelmed we should be by the knowledge of Christ’s love, St. Paul says. Jesus has suffered for us and with us so that we might be made new in him. The Christian finds true joy in doing God’s will, both in good times and in bad.
