REFLECTION
How much easier it is for us to canonize our human traditions, especially those relating to faith and worship, than to be converted! In today’s gospel, Jesus condemns the attitude which argues over externals, separates the sacred from real life, and thinks that scrupulous following of human regulations pleases God. Everything God has created is good; whether God’s good gifts are used for good or evil depends on our intention. In Deuteronomy, the law code of the Old Testament, we discover that God’s law is more than a series of commands. It is the outward expression of encounter with God in the depths of our hearts. God has made a covenant, or agreement in love, with us. Obedience to God’s law is acted out in our wholehearted and loving following of God into the promised land, into the fullness of life. Our loving obedience will speak of God’s love to the world. The letter of James urges us to do more than listen to God’s word; we are to follow it. What better way to demonstrate our dependence on our Father than to love those who are the most needy?
