REFLECTION

Salvation is meant for the entire person. God’s healing of the blind, the lame, the deaf and dumb, which Isaiah promises, is the sign of complete liberation from sin and the effects of sin; the water flowing in the dry land of Palestine symbolizes salvation. In the story of Jesus’ cure of a deaf-mute, today’s gospel gives us a sign that the salvation promised is at hand. This miracle takes place among the pagans, anticipating the Christian ministry to the world; it shares many features of pagan miracle stories. But Jesus’ gestures are the sign language by which he communicates with the one he is healing. Jesus, the hidden messiah who avoids worldly fame, can no longer keep secret his wonderful works! The letter of James shows how the Church can be a sign of God’s salvation in today’s world. We who share a common faith belong to the family of Jesus. The poor among us should be treated as well as the rich are. Indeed, we as Church should identify with the poor and oppressed, for they were the first to be enriched by God with faith in Christ.
