REFLECTION
To be true to his task as the Christ, God’s anointed one, Jesus must suffer. Christians too must take up their cross, a fearful reality, and follow their Lord. These difficult words are spoken as Jesus’ ministry has taken him far from Jerusalem. From now on he will make his way to the place of his death with firm resolve. But Peter, first to recognize Jesus as the longed-for messiah, objects, and is sharply rebuked for playing the part of Satan by tempting Jesus to depart from God’s will. There can be no compromise: to save our life we must carry our cross. Jesus had read of his destiny in the scriptures and accepted the Father’s will for his life. In the first reading we see the suffering servant of Old Testament prophecy. This innocent victim and peaceable non-resister turns the other cheek. His body is bruised and his spirit is unflinching, for God is at his side. We Christians should read the letter of James with special care. It is not enough to profess our faith with Peter; the proof lies in renouncing self and loving our neighbor with deeds of charity.
