REFLECTION
Every Christian—including those called to leadership in the Church—must share Christ’s life of service and destiny of suffering. In the gospel, James and John ask to rule with Christ in glory. Jesus rejects their request; his followers must drink from his cup of suffering and be renewed by sharing in the cross. Even then, disciples cannot lay claim to a special reward. That is God’s to dispense; our duty is to follow the Lord. Leadership in the Church is to be radically different from worldly authority. Jesus himself provides its standard when he dies an atoning death for the benefit of everyone. Today’s first reading, from a servant song of Isaiah, offers a prophetic picture of Jesus’ own mission of redemptive suffering. He will accomplish God’s will and receive the promise made to the faithful servant. Jesus is our high priest, the book of Hebrews tell us; he has shared our human weakness, even being tempted, though remaining free from sin. Therefore he can serve as our mediator and bring us into God’s presence. We have reason to be confident; let us cling to faith in Jesus!
