REFLECTION

Advent is here. We begin our preparations for Christmas, joyful for God's great gift of Christ the redeemer. We celebrate the beginning of the Christ-event, not simply as a past moment in history but for the future hope it gives us. Although Jeremiah's prophecy alludes to Jesus' historical coming, this first Sunday of Advent emphasizes another coming: the glorious arrival of Christ our Lord at the end of time. Luke's Gospel uses traditional imagery-so familiar to our modern world— to picture the end. Luke's point is not the cosmic catastrophe itself but the people it overtakes. Some are not ready. Others, whose lives have been deeply human and filled with prayer, have nothing to fear and everything to look forward to. They can stand tall; Christ is coming to complete the liberation of the world from sin. On a more intimate note, St. Paul has a special prayer for his beloved converts: that their love for all humanity may be like his great love for them. May we grow in holiness together until that great Day.
