REFLECTION

Something very important is about to happen. Solemnly Luke situates the preaching of John the Baptist, last of the prophets, within secular and religious history. John begins to speak the word he heard in the wilderness: people must change radically the landscape of their hearts, in Isaiah’s powerful image, and be washed in the waters of baptism, the sign of cleansing from sin. Only then will they be ready to welcome the Lord, only then will the world see the salvation promised by God. We find Isaiah’s imagery also in the first reading, but now it is God who levels the land to make easy and safe his people’s journey toward the new Jerusalem. Today, tears; one day, jubilation! God the Eternal One will live with us, and we will share the glory of his holiness. What delight God will take in us! Already the Good News of Jesus’ ministry brings joy to those who share it; St. Paul prays for the continued growth of Christmas’ love of one another. Love above all prepares us for Jesus’ coming on the great Day.
