REFLECTION

Jesus is our liberator. But do we believe that? Will we let him free us? Today Luke the historian begins his account of Jesus’ effective, Spirit-filled ministry in Galilee. In his hometown of Nazareth Jesus declares himself to be the liberator Isaiah promised. (Freeing people from physical and social evils is the bible’s sign of liberation from sin.) Thanks to our baptism, St. Paul tells us, we can experience the freedom of Christ. Through baptism prejudicial distinctions are erased and all members of Christ’s body are called to contribute their gifts for the common good. We are to respect our differences and maintain our unity, no one’s gift excluding or dominating another’s. When we praise God for others’ gifts and are not jealous of them, we are free to carry on Christ’s liberating work. The first scripture passage, which shows Ezra the priest reading from the book of the Law, reminds us of our own liturgical assemblies. We gather to hear the demanding word of God and answer with our Amen. However, difficult it is to obey, God’s word brings joy.

Catholic Cemeteries & Funeral Services

Today we welcome Catholic Cemeteries & Funeral Services to our parish. Catholic Cemeteries are a vital part of the Catholic Church. Operated under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Toronto, each Catholic cemetery and funeral home reflects our Catholic beliefs.

To learn more, visit www.catholic-cemeteries.com

Did you know?

  • That it is a good practice to ask for the Sacrament of the Sick whenever you or any of your loved ones is ill?
  • That a friend or a family member does not need to be critically/terminally ill or “at the point of death” before you call a priest to pray for the person?
  • That using the phrase “last rite” is incorrect; and that saying “the Sacrament of the Sick” is the correct way to invite a priest to pray for a critically ill family member or friend?
