REFLECTION

The Lenten use of the story of the woman taken in adultery emphasizes that before God we are all sinners; the one who condemns incurs the greater sin. Jesus’ death makes available to all the forgiveness and peace which he gives to this sinful woman. She alone, and not her partner, has been brought by Jesus’ enemies for a possible horrible death by stoning. They hope to trap this popular teacher: either he must ignore the mosaic law or discredit his own merciful teaching. As she stands in shame, Jesus takes attention away from her by writing in the sand. We see her renewed sense of self-worth as her shamed accusers leave the scene. Jesus respects her human dignity; he refuses to condemn as he tells her not to sin again. The first reading encourages us to forget our sinful past as God does. What greater reason do we need for praise? Since God has forgiven us, we should seek to be united with the Lord. To be holy is to pattern ourselves after Jesus’ death; then we will know him and be found in him.

Pontifical Collection for the Church in the Holy Land on Good Friday, April 18, 2025

The annual Good Friday Collection is the only yearly request asked by the Holy See of Dioceses & parishioners throughout the world. The collection helps the Church of the Holy Land to maintain Christian sites, so important for Christians everywhere, & to provide pastoral, educational, & social works among the small Christian population.

The Church & our Christian brothers & sisters count your help to retain a faith filled Christian presence in this land of our Lord. Please give generously during the St. Joseph’s parish Good Friday celebration on April 18, 2025. If you are unable to attend the service, it is possible to contribute online by going to Commissariat.ca/supporting-us and donating via CanadaHelps or Interac e-transfer. (receipts will be issued).

On behalf of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, to whom the Holy See has entrusted this ministry for nearly 700 years, and Fr. Robert Mokry, o.f.m., Commissary of the Holy Land in Canada, sincerely thank you for your support.
