REFLECTION

To be a disciple of Jesus is costly. It means giving Him our absolute love and loyalty. He asks us to put Him first– even above the people and things we love the most. Carrying our cross is part of the journey, but it also brings us the joy of sharing in His life. In today’s readings we are reminded that wisdom from God is different from human thinking. Each of us must be willing to carry our own cross, but like the king going to war, we will not fight a losing battle. In the second reading, Paul asks Philemon to welcome Onesimus, who was once a slave, as a brother in Christ. In doing so he advocates for a radically new relationship. The Gospel changes relationships, makes us new, and revolutionizes the quality of our love.

  2. Sacraments are God’s free gifts to us through the Church and must be received freely?
  3. When parents or grandparents force rather than encourage their children to receive the Sacraments, especially but not limited to Marriage, Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation, the Sacraments so received become invalid?
