Reflection
Today’s scripture reading challenge our religious leaders. Malachi reproaches the priests of the old covenant, while Jesus warns against hypocritical interpreters of the law. We must ask whether we fit into one of these categories. The priests were accused of neglecting the heart of their vocation, the praise of God; besides, their teaching was erroneous. By contrast, the psalm presents the attitude of the truly religious person. The gospel advises us to obey the teaching of our leaders but not necessarily to follow their practice. What would happen if we were to apply Jesus’ teaching about status and titles to Church life today? As a layman, Jesus preached a radical equality in which all are brothers and sisters and humble service is the keynote of a gospel ministry. St. Paul describes his own ministry under the striking image of a nursing mother; he spends himself for the gospel. Let us pray for all the servants of the gospel, that they may pattern themselves after Christ our servant and brother.
