REFLECTION
Winters nears. When the gray land is covered with a blanket of snow, the earth falls asleep. We are powerless to stop the onslaught of winter’s cold, and the darkness of the season demonstrates our need. Isaiah longs for God to come and save us as only God can: may he rend the heavens and reveal his powerful presence. We have sinned, but our maker and Father will not forget us. We must persevere through the night, which is a sign of temptation and testing in the gospel, and be ready for our Lord’s coming. Advent wears an air of expectancy; we do not know when Christ will return, but our anticipation makes the waiting a joy. The gospel emphasizes our need to be ready and Isaiah expresses our helplessness without the intervention our redeemer. St. Paul serves as model for our prayers of thanks: God has graced beyond measure the followers of his Son. The day of the Lord Jesus, when he will be revealed in all his glory, has yet to arrive. While we wait, we are made rich with God’s gifts.
