REFLECTION

Christ is coming to save us! With traditional language and imagery, the readings from the prophet Daniel and the Gospel of Mark convey the overwhelming power of that last day. Then creation will be transformed and time will end. Cosmic upheaval symbolizes the new order which God will create. For each of us the time of Christ’s coming to judge and to gather us home is near. God will triumph, but it will be the God who has chosen us, who is revealed in the Son of Man, Jesus. We should be able to read the signs of the times, but we do not need to know when or how God will triumph. Jesus himself, truly human, did not know the time of the great Day, that end which is the beginning. Daniel’s prophecy is one of the first Old Testament writings to promise resurrection to eternal life, the radiant state of those who are saved. Not only the universe but our very lives will be transfigured by virtue of the redemptive death and resurrection of Christ our mediator. His perfect offering consecrates him as the one to lead us home.
