REFLECTION
To whom do we owe allegiance, God or civil authorities? Our first reading calls the Persian king Cyrus God’s anointed. Although Cyrus does not worship Israel’s God, he carries out the will of the Lord of History. How do we act when the demands of Church and state conflict? Jesus’ opponents try to trap him by raising the question of the relationship of politics and religion. Jesus does not give an answer but states a principle, making each of us responsible for acting according to an informed conscience. When the state requires more than its due, and we are tempted to idolatry, we must disobey the state. A Christian cannot adopt a civil religion which believes in “my country, right or wrong.” But how often, in modern times has Caesar been given what belongs to God! If we must stand alone after a moral decision, will we have the courage of our convictions. St. Paul encouraged by the Thessalonians’ faith in action, which he sees as a gift of the Spirit. May our contemporary prophets be move by such vibrant faith!

2nd COLLECTION FOR WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, 22 OCTOBER 2023
For World Mission Day, Pope Francis has chosen the theme that takes inspiration from the story of the disciples of Emmaus, in the Gospel of Luke (Lk 24:1335):
Hearts on fire, feet on the move.
On this Sunday, we join our Holy Father in supporting his missions. Together, through our prayers and financial support, we bring the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions.
