REFLECTION
The parable of the generous employer forces us to reexamine our understanding of God and his mercy. The landowner, whom we readily identify as God, is, by human standards, unjust; he pays those who have worked long and hard the very same wage that is given to the workers of an hour. But the parable’s point is not this inequity in the wage scale; it is the employer’s compassion for all the workers. He pays sufficient for everyone's needs. To give less would reduce the most recent employees to hardship. To each one God is generous, Jesus insists, providing what we need. God’s way are so different from ours, Isaiah exclaims in the first reading. But he is close to us, concerned about our well-being, and forgives all who ask him. Facing death, St. Paul speaks of his own intense longing for full union with Christ. If giving glory to Christ is all that matters, how God rewards us—or others—should be of no concern. Everything that we have is God’s merciful gift. The Lord is near; let us give him glory!
